What to Wear for Family Photos in San Diego

Figuring out what everyone should wear for family photos can somehow become the most stressful part of the whole thing!

The good news is, you do not need matching outfits or one super specific color palette. The goal is to coordinate everyone in a way that feels natural, comfortable, and fits the location you choose.

Choose a Color Palette

Start with about 2–4 complementary colors and use those throughout everyone’s outfits.

Neutral tones, pastels, and even richer jewel tones can all photograph beautifully. The location can help guide your choices too. Softer colors work really well in natural outdoor settings, while bolder colors can stand out more in an urban location.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Everyone does not need to wear the exact same outfit.

Instead, spread your color palette throughout the family. One person might wear a subtle pattern while everyone else wears coordinating solids.

This keeps everything looking put together without feeling overly matched.

Keep Patterns Simple

Patterns are totally okay, but I recommend keeping them subtle.

Small florals, simple stripes, or another soft pattern can add variety. I usually recommend having only one or two people wear a pattern so the outfits do not compete with each other.

I would also skip large logos or anything super busy that could pull attention away from your family.

Add Texture and Layers

This is one of the easiest ways to make simple outfits look even better in photos.

Think knits, linen, lace, cardigans, or other textured fabrics. Layers add dimension without making the outfits feel too busy.

Think About the Location

Your outfits should work with your surroundings, not disappear into them.

For example, if we are photographing somewhere with lots of greenery, I probably would not put the entire family in green.

For beach photos in San Diego, softer tones and natural textures work beautifully. For parks, fields, or trails, warmer colors and earthy tones can be really pretty.

Don’t Forget the Shoes

Shoes are part of the outfit too.

Neutral or coordinating shoes usually work best, and barefoot can be a really cute option for beach sessions.

Most importantly, make sure everyone is comfortable enough to actually move around.

Put Everything Together Before Photo Day

One of my favorite tips is to lay everyone’s outfits side by side before the session.

It makes it much easier to notice if one color feels out of place or if there are too many patterns happening at once.

And if you have little ones, bringing an extra outfit is never a bad idea because… kids!
